Match Reports
- Congratulations to the U-16 team who claimed the U-16 Northern Division 3 Championship title in an excellent game against Letterkenny Gaels. Final score in the match was Malin 1-18 Letterkenny Gaels 3-11,
two late goals by the Letterkenny side leaving the Inishowen side holding on at the end to win by the narrowest of margins.
These sides had met in the league earlier in the year with Malin winning comfortably but Letterkenny were up for this one from the start and, with the help of a fairly strong breeze, completely dominated the first quarter leading by 1-07 to 0-02 with 20 minutes gone, the goal a penalty expertly converted by Oran McMacken. Malin were very much in danger of leaving too much to do at this stage but responded well and hit 5 points without reply before the break to leave just the goal between the sides at half time.
Seamus Houton opened the scoring for Malin early in the second half before points in quick succession from John Doran, Peter Doherty and Noel Gildea put Letterkenny Gaels 1-10 to 0-08 ahead. Malin picked up their game at this stage with Seamus Houton excellent at full forward and hit 5 in quick succession to draw level before a long ball in was won by Houton who fed Brendan McLaughlin to fire into the net (despite the best efforts of Gaels keeper Ethan Mulrennan who had a superb game throughout, stopping at least four other goal bound efforts) to give Malin a three point lead. Malin added 3 more scores as they appeared to be cruising to victory but a goal somewhat against the run of play by John Doran of Letterkenny Gaels left 3 between the sides again going into the last five minutes. Jonathan McCarron and Seamus Houton added two more scores for Malin as time ran out before a final flurry from the Gaels yielded a Conor McBrearty goal and a Doran point, Malin holding on to claim the trophy.
Scorers for Malin; Daniel McDaid(0-8), Brendan McLaughlin(1-05), Seamus Houton(0-4), Jonathan McCarron. Scorers for Letterkenny Gaels; John Doran(1-05), Oran McMacken(1-01), Conor McBrearty(1-01), Peter Doherty(0-3), Noel Gildea.
- Malin minors recorded a 0-13 to 1-04 win over Aodh Ruadh, Killygordon in the first leg of their championship encounter on Monday evening. Malin dominated throughout, leading by 0-07 to 0-02 at the break and could have won by a greater margin although the visitors did respond with a goal early in the second half, the only blot on an otherwise excellent defensive performance by Malin with Tony McColgan outstanding. The second leg takes place next Monday, 10th August in Killygordon. Scorers for Malin; Daniel McDaid(0-5), Garry Farren(0-3), Shaun Monagle(0-2),Cathal McGrenahan, Finbarr Collins, Brendan McLaughlin.

ACL Division 2
Malin 0-10 Gaoth Dobhair 0-12
Gaoth Dobhair made the long journey north worthwhile on Saturday evening, a late surge from the visitors being enough to claim both points although, had Malin taken their chances then the result would surely have gone in their favour.
Both sides had a number of regulars missing, Kevin Cassidy one of the more noticeable exceptions from the Gaoth Dobhair line out while Malin had to start without Charlie Byrne, Matthew Byrne and Paddy McColgan. Malin did start much the brighter of the sides and had four scoring opportunities in the opening minutes to avail of only one, Anthony Kelly recording the opening score from a free. Gaoth Dobhair weathered the early storm and drew level with a Cornelius Gallagher free before centre back Danny Curran got on the end of a good move to fist over for the lead.
Conor Farren drew Malin level soon after and both sides recorded a further two points apiece to leave the game tied four points each with 20 minutes gone in the first half. Gaoth Dobhair edged in front once more with a Fionnan Diver score before they were reduced to 14 men in the 22nd minute, Eamonn McGee fully deserving of the straight red card he received after a cynical and somewhat petulant elbow in the face of Malin’s Gary Farren. Gaoth Dobhair should have been made to suffer further as the resulting throw up was won by Malin, Paddy Kelly finding Gerard McLaughlin free in front of goal but his effort rebounded off the post and the rebound driven wide by Damian Ward. The visitors reorganised defensively and regained enough composure to hit a further brace of points before the break while a rare score from Malin’s John McLaughlin left the half time score 0-07 to 0-05 in favour of the visitors.
Malin began the second half with all guns blazing and were level within two minutes of the restart, Anthony Kelly providing both scores but once again the visitors picked up a gear, scores from James Carroll and Owen Ward putting them two ahead again. A Paddy Kelly point left the minimum between the sides after six minutes as Malin entered possibly their most dominant stage of the game, but the experience of the visitors full back line smothered a number of Malin attacks, indeed a full 11 minutes of almost constant pressure from the home side elapsed before Michael Doherty drew the sides level for the 5th time in the game. Malin continued to pressurize for the lead but it was to prove elusive, Gaoth Dobhair drawing on all their experience to hit three late scores including a perfectly executed free from James Gallagher 2 metres in from the sideline in front of the stand. Conor Farren hit his third score of the day in added time but Gaoth Dobhair had done enough to win.

Malin Reserves
Malin reserves had a good win over Gaoth Dobhair wining by 3-11 to 1-12. Malin completely dominated the first half, leading by 3-08 to 0-04 at the break. The second half saw the visitors come more into the game but Malin never looked like losing the advantage, winning by 3-11 to 1-12 at the end. Scorers for Malin were Daniel McDaid(0-4), Eddie Kelly(0-4), Gary Collins(1-01), Simon Ward(1-0), Martin Ward(1-0), Seamus Doherty, Finbarr Collins.

Match Reports
Well done to the Senior ladies side on making it through to the 2009 Junior Championship final with a 5-10 to 4-04 win over Convoy on Friday evening (full match report available by clicking here). Hopefully Zoe Doherty(ankle injury) and Maria McLaughlin(Flu), both of whom were missing on Friday evening, will recover fully to take part in the final. The final takes place this weekend, with venue and times unclear at the time of writing, but check local press for details and the club would seek as much support as possible for the girls in the final. - Well done also to the Malin minor side who progressed to the championship quarter-final with a second leg away win against Red Hugh’s, Killygordon, Malin winning by 0-14 to 0-09 to add to their win in the home leg the previous week.
- The Junior B side put in a fine performance to defeat Pettigo in Malin on Saturday evening by 1-17 to 1-12. In a very entertaining first half Pettigo led most of the way, a goal midway through the half putting them 1-05 to 0-04 ahead. Malin did have opportunities, Daniel McDaid putting a Malin penalty over the bar after Matthew McDaid was fouled but a Stephen McLaughlin goal before the break sent the sides in 1-07 each at half time.
The sides continued to trade scores in the second half before Malin turned the screw hitting six unanswered points to go 1-16 to 1-11 ahead although, it must be said, Pettigo were architects of their own downfall to an extent, indiscipline from players and officials alike leading to every Malin free in the second half being moved forward and the visitors reduced to fourteen before the end.
Scorers for Malin; Daniel McDaid(0-5, 3 frees, 1 pen), Jason Doherty(0-5, 4 frees), Shaun Monagle (0-3), Stephen McLaughlin(O)(1-0), Gerard McLaughlin(0-2), Steven McLaughlin(F), Darren Doherty.

Match Results
Congratulations to the senior ladies on winning the 2009 Junior Championship on Sunday evening (first pictures from the match are available in our photo gallery ). It was a terrific all round team performance from the girls, the score-line of 3-10 to 0-02 telling its own story. Well done to all the panel and also the management team of Eamon Ryan, Susan Byrne and Shaun McLaughlin. The full match report is available by clicking here. - Well done, also, to the senior men's side on a good victory against Naomh Mhuire, Annagry, this leaves Malin with 14 points and four games remaining, home to St Naul's and away to Aodh Ruadh, Glenfin and McCumhaills. One more win should ensure avoidance of relegation play-offs while anything more than that could lead to promotion play-offs, such are the narrow margins in this division.
- The reserves capped a good weekend all round for the club with a 1-12 to 1-03 win over Naomh Mhuire reserves, Malin led by 0-07 to zero at one stage and 1-08 to 0-01 at half time. Naomh Mhuire hit a second half goal to make the final score a little better looking but they never looked like threatening Malin. Malin; Chris McLaughlin(0-1,45), Finbarr Collins, Neil McGilloway, Keiron McColgan, Simon Ward, Danny Lafferty, Gerard Greene(1-02), Ryan McDaid, Brendan McLaughlin, Gary Collins, Eddie Kelly(0-2), Seamus Doherty(0-3), Steven McLaughlin(0-2), William Logan(0-2), Martin Ward.
Congratulations
Congratulations to senior player Damian Ward and his wife Kay on the birth of baby Orla recently.
