Congratulations
Malin Junior Bs are the 2009 Division 5 winners after a fine performance in Muff on Saturday afternoon. A good first half performance stood to the Inishowen side as Naomh Conail rallied back in the second period but Malin held on to claim the title. Both sides struggled early on to split the posts, Malin’s Daniel McDaid having an early free drop short while Naomh Conail had three frees in succession go wide in the first 10 minutes. Malin did break the deadlock after 11 minutes, Daniel McDaid scoring from a free after Jason Doherty was fouled and McDaid added a second score from a dead ball 2 minutes later. Malin began to dominate the game and added points from Gerard and Steven McLaughlin to go 0-04 to zero ahead midway through the half before Daniel McDaid hit the net in the 18th minute. The Inishowen side were threatening to run riot at this stage but Joe Conway settled Naomh Conail with his sides opening score after 22 minutes, the sides swapping frees late in the half from Malin’s Daniel McDaid and Naomh Conail’s Patrick Gill to give Malin a commanding 1-05 to 0-02 lead at the break.
Malin almost killed the game off early in the second half, Stephen McLaughlin very unfortunate to see his effort come back off the post before a fourth McDaid free put Malin 1-06 to 0-02 ahead with 5 minutes of the second half gone. Any thoughts Malin might have had of an easy second half were almost immediately dispelled as Naomh Conail’s Christopher Molloy lifted his side with a goal to leave four points between the sides. The Glenties side had their best period of the game in the next 15 minutes, adding 3 frees from Joe Conway, James Gallagher and Molloy to leave just the minimum between the sides going into the last 10 minutes of the game. Malin needed inspiration at this stage and it came in the form of John Gerard McLaughlin who hit a fine score to edge his side two in front. Daniel McDaid put 3 between the sides with his 5th free of the game before substitute Eddie Kelly hit the insurance score for Malin, though Joe Conway converted a late Naomh Conail free Malin never looked like conceding a second goal and ran out 3 point winners in the end.
Malin Team: Daniel Mullarkey, John Doherty, Neil McGilloway, Kieran McColgan, Finbarr Collins, Stephen Grant, Tony McColgan, John G McLaughlin(0-1), Philip McClean, Shaun Monagle, Jason Doherty, Gerard McLaughlin(0-1), Stephen Owen, Daniel McDaid(1-05, 5 frees), Steven McLaughlin(0-1) subs used Eddie Kelly(0-1), Brian Doherty, Paco McLaughlin, Darren Doherty.
Naomh Conail scorers: Christopher Molloy(1-01, free), Joe Conway(0-3, 2 frees), James Gallagher(0-1, free), Patrick Gill(0-1, free). .
